Offline-ish recommendation?
Unfortunately, most of my recommendations are online, but I'm almost finished with this really great book. This is going to be just so incredibly nerdy, but it’s called “Goodbye Eastern Europe.” I realized I didn't know anything about Eastern Europe or Central Europe or whatever. And it's a really interesting history about one of the most forgotten, overlooked, often invaded parts of the world. It's just told through little vignettes that start literally at the dawn of time. It’s written so creatively and it's hilarious, funny, absurd and so much fun.
Also, I’ll throw out one more thing that’s kind of fun: I had dinner last week at Cafe Kestrel in Red Hook. It is hard to get to, but that's what keeps it good.
What’s your screen time like?
My daily average is actually not bad at all: four hours. Is that crazy? It's up 18% from last week. Mostly locked in on the social media site formerly known as Twitter. X coming in at the most used by far. Then my iMessages, Instagram, Blue Sky, New York Times and Slack apps. So boring.
Hot take?
This isn't really a hot take, but I do feel like it has to be said because I was reading an article that was like “actually, there are really great burritos here in New York City. And here's a bunch of them.” And I've tried a bunch of them. They're terrible. No Mexican food is good here.
Internet gripes/crimes you’d prosecute?
I feel like I have the obvious, populist ones. The first one is playing stuff, any sort of media out loud. It’s the biggest breakdown of our cultural norms that's happened in the last 10 years, or five years, or whatever. I propose this idea: universal headphones. I really want everybody to have access to headphones so I don't have to hear some loud TikTok.
I have one more.If anybody here has done this, that's okay. But subletting your apartment from December 24 to January 2 is so annoying to me. I mean, I get it. The cost of rent in New York City is a lot, but nobody wants to sublet your apartment for, like, three days.
