This week, we chatted with the artist Maya Man about:

Social niche or account we should all tap into?

It’s not that niche, but Are.na the social media platform. I use it really heavily, and it's a really beautiful online community. I hosted their Are.na annual publication launch at [my studio] Heart in December. I've been using it for a long time, and I think it's a good way to make sense of and organize all the content that you see.

Offline-ish recommendation?

Every day I walk on Canal Street or Hester, by so many of the “I heart New York” gift shops. These are the best stores in New York. First of all, visually, they're amazing. And the design is so sick. All the t-shirts and the key chains all crowded together on the slat wall and everything. Next time you see one I really recommend you just go in and take a look around.

What’s your screen time like?

My average daily screen time is probably about four or five hours on my phone, but when I'm not on my phone, I'm on my computer. So definitely 10 hours at least. But I also don't have Wi-Fi in my apartment.

I got Wi-Fi at Heart, and I was just moving into my apartment and I didn't set it up yet. Then I was like, it's actually kind of nice. If I have a call or I need to do something I go to the studio and I can use a hotspot if I really need to do something.

At home I definitely read a lot more now. And it's enough of a point of friction to set up the hotspot that I don't go on my computer as much. It's kind of nice. And also it's less expensive because I'm not paying double Wi-Fi. We'll see how long it lasts.

Hot take?

People don't really like when I say that I think that everything is a performance. But I believe that it is. So I guess that's my unpopular opinion.

Also, I don't think that there should be ice water. I actually think the general preference should be toward hot water, because ice water makes you so cold and it also makes things taste bad.

Internet gripes/crimes you’d prosecute?

If I don't like something someone is doing, I can mute them. But to not follow back or to be really precious about having a low following? Who you're following doesn't even matter anymore in terms of what you see on social media platforms. Just follow. Why not? And don't try to keep it so low. What does that mean? What are you trying to say about who you are?
