Offline-ish recommendation?
My rec is to revisit things that cause a ton of discourse from like ten years ago. So I re-read “How Should a Person Be” by Sheila Heti. It was called narcissistic, and she was compared to Lena Dunham. I think it's the same reason why people are revisiting “Girls” right now. That show made people so angry in 2012 and 2013. Now people are like, no that was actually really good. If you could just watch it without the noise, you would have seen what a great show it was.
So that's what I did with Heti’s book. It's such a fun book. It’s autofiction. The main character wanders around Toronto, hanging out with artists getting jealous of all her friends, asking herself “Who should I emulate?” “Who should I be like?” It's so refreshing. You get to exist in someone else's head.
Social niche or account we should all tap into?
I love Cities by Diana, I love Doorknob Girl. I love all those sketch comedy girlies. I love Veronica is Cool and Grace Kuhlenschmidt. And Kay Poyer obviously. She’s the queen.
Overrated/underrated cultural topics or phenomena right now?
Underrated: magazine journalism. Print is back. You heard it here first. No one else has ever said that. Overrated: surface level TikTok trend reporting that has a gloss of exclusivity.
If you could banish one social app forever, which would you banish?
Oh this is easy, Facebook. I think it's caused the most damage, and it's the biggest hellhole. Not even just because of the AI slop, but that’s the nail in the coffin.
